The Fine Art Program

OUR MISSION

The Fine Art Program was designed to give its participants the opportunity to explore self-expression with the artistic vocabulary of form, color and rhythm through various two and three-dimensional media. In addition to promoting communication, developing physical movement, creating a more productive social atmosphere and freeing artistic ability from disability, the artists' sense of self esteem and self-worth are enhanced. Exhibition and sale of original art objects and commercial application of the Fine Art that is created provides monetary rewards for those whose works have been accepted as well as greater mainstream community inclusion for participants whose works are submitted for exhibitions and juried competitions.

Internships and volunteer opportunities are available through the Arts In Motion Music Therapy program. Contact the Departments Directors at (954)584-8000 ext 328

Fine Art Exhibition

The Ann Storck Center proudly presents an exhibition of fine art produced entirely by artists who participate in the Center’s award winning Expressive Arts / Fine Art Program.  This exhibition is made possible through the kind consideration and support of the Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center.  All of us at the Ann Storck Center deeply appreciate and value this exceptional opportunity to display the talent and abilities of those we serve. Join us as we appreciate the work of our Artists.  Contact the Center for details!

A Brush With Greatness

An Excerpt of an original story by Peter Bernard, Staff Writer,

Sun-Sentinel

In front of her easel, paintbrush in hand, Mindy Sierra forgets the brain aneurysm at age 11 that put her in a coma for 14 weeks and confined her to a wheelchair with severe mental and physical disabilities.

Instead, a smiling, confident Sierra sees only lush landscapes, detailed wildlife and abstract portraits.

"I just paint what I see in my head," said Sierra, 25, who has lived at the Ann Storck Center...since age 18.  "And I try to show my love for art."

Art teachers Kathleen Lumpkins and Karin Batchelder work with 83 Ann Storck Students, helping some learn or relearn basic motor skills while helping others, like Sierra, develop their artistic style.

"Mindy is an extraordinary student," Lumpkins said.

"She has improved a lot in the past few years, and she's better than some of the commercially successful artists I've seen."

Sierra's artistic career has blossomed, having sold four paintings and received commissions to produce works for Everglades College, the Florida Association of Rehabilitation Facilities and for the capitol in Tallahassee.

Most recently, Sierra painted a dapper chef, a piece of art the center will use to promote its 10th Annual Celebrity Chefs Food Tasting and Auction.  A limited, autographed print of the painting, called Chef 1, will be sold at the event, and reproductions will be used on a host of gifts and promotional materials for the fundraiser.

Like many Ann Storck clients, Sierra needs constant care and can't live independently.  But she has big plans.  "I want to do my own art shows and have my own art gallery someday," she said.  Sierra developed an interest in art as a child when a third-grade teacher in Miami took her class to an art museum.  "When I saw all of the beautiful paintings, I was inspired.  I wanted to be able to paint like that too."

THE FINE ART PROGRAM

ARTS EXPERIENCE

With Arts Experience the individual has the opportunity to participate in sensory art activities using therapeutic art techniques that facilitate creative expression. Activity takes place in individual sessions working with various types of art media including paints, pastels, ink on paper, stretched canvas, board, or tile.  Three-dimensional media forms include sand, wax, clay, and found objects.

APPLIED ARTS

Through Applied Art participants have an alternative avenue of exploration within the field of artistic expression enabling greater mainstream community inclusion through the creation of Applied Art Objects.  In addition to promoting communication, developing physical movement, creating a more productive social atmosphere and freeing artistic ability from disability, the artist's sense of esteem and self-worth are enhanced.  Exhibition and sale of original art objects and commercial application of the applied art that is created provides monetary rewards for those whose works have been accepted.

ART ENRICHMENT

Through Art ENRICHment participants have the opportunity to explore the artist, the social structure and the history surrounding specific styles and works of art.  Art activities include exposure to artwork from different cultures and historical periods, and field trips to broaden the experience of art in the fabric of our world community.  Through art activities and the design of basics lessons, Art ENRICHment offers a focus on how to use what we've learned and to bring it into the participant's artistic work.

  • Art Appreciation Classes in History and Artistic Styles with applied activity for implementing information.

  • Community Outings to museums, artist's studios, movies, poetry readings.

  • Design Basics Classes (structural theory behind art form) with applied activity for implementing information ie: color wheel and color theory, visual depth of field, spatial perception, etc.
