Ann Storck Center Wins 2016 Winterfest® Junior Captain Contest

Daniel is a Superhero in Training

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Dec. 9, 2016) – Ann Storck Center (ASC) is proud to have Daniel Moreno representing the agency in the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest® Boat Parade as this year’s Jr. Captain. As the Jr. Captain, the 3-year-old will have his name adorned in lights on the sides of the boat and ride aboard the Jr. Captain showboat powered by FPL. Daniel received more than 1300 online votes to win this coveted title. Joining him during his special occasion on December 10th will be 25 of his friends, family, ASC teachers, and more. With this year’s Parade theme being “Comics & Cartoons Rockin’ the Night Away,” Daniel winning the title of Jr. Captain is the perfect fit as he is a superhero in training.

“Daniel has been more than a hero to us, he has survived all adversities and remains strong,” his mother, Andrea Sanchez said. “When Daniel was not able to crawl, he moved and kicked until he was able to reach his destination, when he could not walk, he would scoot to the places he wanted to get to. He never stops trying.”

Daniel is one of more than 60 children the Center cares for daily in its Early Intervention Preschool. He was born with Down syndrome and spent the first 12 days of his life connected to oxygen and other various vital lifesaving machines. At 8-months-old, he was diagnosed with diabetes after almost dying in the back of an ambulance when he stopped breathing. Although he faces daily challenges, he is not defined by his disabilities. Despite being ridden with multiple developmental setbacks, he stays determined to never give up.

“It’s an honor to have Daniel representing ASC, especially as we kick off our anniversary celebration. While it’s been 35 years of incorporation with the name ASC, it’s been 65 years of Ann Storck’s loving legacy of caring for the developmentally disabled of Broward County,” CEO of ASC Charlotte Mather-Taylor said. “It’s humbling having ASC known as one of the oldest Broward non-profit organizations. We are thrilled to be part of one of south Florida’s oldest, most loved holiday traditions.”
