ADT Participants Give Thanks Through Music and Poetry at Fall Festival

December 11, 2018

Adult Day Training (ADT) participants at Ann Storck Center are accustomed to flexing their creative muscles. Every performance put on at ADT is fueled by a brainstorm session among participants, and this year's ADT Fall Harvest Celebration was no different. ASC's music therapist BriAnne Weaver is the person who has brought these ideas to fruition for 11 years.

"I ask the individuals what they would like to do, and then I figure out a way to do just that," Weaver explained. "All of the ideas are always theirs."

For this year's performance, Linda wanted to write a poem and Mindy wanted everyone to share what they're thankful for. Weaver suggested a poem in which everyone gives thanks. The result is "We Are Thankful: A Collaborative Poem," which was read aloud to friends and family in attendance.

We are thankful for the people that are in our lives
Those we see everyday and those we don’t
We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet
We are thankful for our families and the people we love
We are thankful for our mothers, our brothers, our fathers, and our sisters We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet
We are thankful for being able to deal with hard times
We are thankful for our pets and the people who love us
We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet
We are thankful for sitting outside in the sunshine
We are thankful for rain showers and rainbows
We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet
We are thankful for the people who take care of us
For the people at ADT and for all the friends we make at the Ann Storck Center We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet
We are thankful for being able to work with people we love
We are thankful for good times and bad times, for life, and for happiness We are thankful for the turkey we eat and the people we meet

Written with input from:
BriAnne, Catherine, Ernest, Lennie, Linda C, Maria, Mindy, Muhammad, Pablo, & Yasmine

The group also put their spin on a song titled Take Your Spade by Sara Watkins. The lyrics were rewritten by ADT participants Linda C. and Yasmine.

Sun is up; A new day is before you

Sun is up; Wake your sleepy soul

Sun is up; Hold on to what is yours

Lift up your voice and give thanks
Open your heart; Leave yesterday behind you

Open your heart; But forget not where you've been

Open your heart; Forgive and be forgiven
Lift up your voice and give thanks
Give thanks; For all that you've been given

Give thanks; For who you can become
Give thanks; For each moment and each promise

Lift up your voice and give thanks
Give thanks

Friends and family smiled and swayed as their loved ones sang songs and expressed their thanks. Along with the musical performance and poetry recitation, family and friends enjoyed a slideshow and shared food and drinks.
