Spread Awareness and Understanding for National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day

March 25, 2013 was the first official National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day in the United States. This day was created thanks to the efforts of the cerebral palsy advocacy group Reaching for The Stars, and senators Johnny Isakson and Bob Casey.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common childhood motor disability, yet it’s not a topic you’ll often come across throughout the year. March has become the time to educate and raise awareness. Throughout March fellow advocates and individuals post facts, pictures, stories, and videos across social media platforms. The goal is to educate, raise awareness and have the U.S. #GoGreenCP.

The vision of National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day is to “ensure that children as well as adults with cerebral palsy (CP) have equal rights, access and opportunities as everyone else in society.”

Around the world there are 17 million people with CP. You may know a family member, friend, colleague, or neighbor living with cerebral palsy. Today we celebrate the lives of those who are affected by cerebral palsy, create powerful voices for them, become a catalyst for solutions and social change, and create attainable actions and outcomes that improve the lives of people with CP. I encourage you to help spread awareness about CP and educate the public to eliminate the stigma attached to people with cerebral palsy.

Sharing resources and personal experiences is an important part of spreading understanding. Remind your community that everyone should have access to good quality of life, something that can feel out of reach for people with disabilities. Let’s also support parents and loved ones by providing access to information about CP, community services, and supplies.

Wear green today with pride for Cerebral Palsy Day!
